Troubleshooting

Common issues and how to fix them.

Voice & Audio

I can't hear anyone in voice chat

Check these in order

  1. Make sure you're not deafened (headphone icon with a slash).
  2. Check your output device — click "Stream Quality" in the voice panel and verify the correct speaker/headset is selected.
  3. Check the per-user volume slider — click a user's name in the voice panel and make sure their volume isn't at 0%.
  4. Try a different browser. Chrome and Edge have the best WebRTC support.
  5. Check your system volume and make sure the browser isn't muted in your OS mixer.

Nobody can hear me

Fix

  1. Make sure you're not muted (microphone icon with a slash).
  2. Check your input device — click "Stream Quality" and verify the correct microphone is selected.
  3. If using Push to Talk, make sure you're holding the correct key. Check your PTT key in User Settings → Notifications.
  4. If using Voice Activity, try speaking louder or switch to Open Mic mode.
  5. Check your browser's microphone permission — click the lock icon in the address bar and ensure microphone access is "Allow".

Voice quality is poor or choppy

Fix

  1. Check your internet connection. Voice requires a stable connection.
  2. Close other tabs or apps that might be using bandwidth.
  3. If on Wi-Fi, try moving closer to your router or switching to a wired connection.
  4. Try disabling your VPN — some VPNs add latency to WebRTC connections.

Screen share shows a black screen

Fix

  1. Make sure you granted screen sharing permission when prompted.
  2. On macOS, go to System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Screen Recording and enable your browser.
  3. Try sharing a specific window instead of the entire screen.
  4. Hardware acceleration can sometimes cause issues — try disabling it in your browser settings.

Login & Account

I forgot my password

Fix

Click "Forgot Password?" on the login page. Enter your email and we'll send a reset link. Check your spam folder if you don't see it.

I'm getting "Invalid or expired token"

Fix

  1. Your session has expired. Log out and log back in.
  2. Clear your browser's cookies and cache for Enclave.
  3. If using a password reset link, make sure it hasn't expired (links are valid for 1 hour).

The app shows a blank/white screen

Fix

  1. Hard refresh: Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac).
  2. Clear your browser cache.
  3. Try a different browser or incognito/private window.
  4. Check if your browser is up to date. Enclave requires a modern browser (Chrome 90+, Firefox 90+, Edge 90+, Safari 15+).

Notifications

I'm not getting desktop notifications

Fix

  1. Go to User Settings → Notifications and click "Enable Desktop Notifications".
  2. Check your browser's notification permission — click the lock icon in the address bar.
  3. On macOS, check System Preferences → Notifications and make sure your browser is allowed.
  4. On Windows, check Settings → System → Notifications.
  5. Make sure you haven't muted the server — check per-server notification settings.

Push notifications aren't working on mobile

Fix

  1. Make sure you've installed Enclave as a PWA (Add to Home Screen).
  2. Go to User Settings → Notifications and enable Push Notifications.
  3. On iOS, push notifications for PWAs require iOS 16.4 or later.
  4. Check that your device's Do Not Disturb mode is off.

Messages & Chat

My messages aren't sending

Fix

  1. Check your internet connection. Look for the offline indicator at the top of the app.
  2. If the channel has slowmode enabled, wait for the cooldown to expire.
  3. Make sure you have permission to send messages in that channel.
  4. Try refreshing the page.

I can't upload files

Fix

  1. Check the file size limit for your plan (Free: 10 MB, Pro: 50 MB).
  2. Check your storage usage in the billing panel — you may have hit your storage limit.
  3. Make sure the file type is supported. Most common formats work.

Encrypted DMs show garbled text

Fix

This can happen if your encryption keys got out of sync. Try:

  1. Log out and log back in to regenerate your key pair.
  2. Ask the other person to send a new message — this will re-establish the key exchange.

Server Issues

Invite link shows "Invalid invite"

Fix

  1. The invite may have expired or been revoked by an admin.
  2. Ask the server admin for a fresh invite link.
  3. If the server has a vanity URL, try that instead (e.g., enclaveapp.online/servername).

I can't see certain channels

Fix

The server admin may have set channel permissions that restrict your access. Contact the server admin or a moderator to request access.

Server settings won't save

Fix

  1. Make sure you click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the settings panel. Changes are not auto-saved.
  2. Scroll down — the save button is sticky at the bottom.
  3. Make sure you have admin permissions.
